General FAQs

  • WHAT IS A FAMILY COUNCIL?
A Family Council is a group of family members and friends of residents in a long-term care home that meet on a regular basis.
  • WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A FAMILY COUNCIL?
    • • The main purpose of most Family Councils is to improve the quality of life of residents and to give families a voice in decisions that affect them and their loved ones in the long-term care home.
    • • Specific objectives vary greatly from Council to Council depending upon the interests of Council members.
    • • Some examples include:
      •   • Support for families
      •   • Education and information
      •   • Discussion and action on concerns
      •   • Communication with the staff in the residents and Home
  • WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A FAMILY COUNCIL?
    • • Allows families to give each other the support and encouragement they need. Sharing with others who are having similar feelings can help family members cope. Provides ongoing mutual support – strength drawn from shared experiences.
    • • Provides a forum for education and information regarding resident’s rights and to become knowledgeable about the Home's operations, policies, rules and health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, affecting the residents.
    • • Council involvement helps provide family members with an opportunity to express their ideas and concerns and a way to work for positive change. A “united voice” to address issues as a “united effort”. A Family Council is a group in which the families can be the catalyst for positive actions to improve care.
    • • Family Council involvement can benefit residents who are physically or mentally unable to voice their concerns and needs as well as those without family.
    • • The Home also benefits through dealing directly with families and establishing meaningful lines of communication. Staff may be able to use the Family Council as a sounding board for new ideas.
    • • Residents benefit from council efforts to improve the quality of life in the Home.
  • WHAT IS A RESIDENTS COUNCIL?
In our long-term care homes, the Residents Council is a formal council consisting of officers elected by the Residents and provides an opportunity to express your likes and dislikes and/or concerns in an open unrestricted forum. Council meetings are held monthly. Minutes of meetings are documented, posted for public viewing and forwarded to the Administrator's attention. Any issues or concerns brought forth by the residents council will have a written response from the Administrator in a timely fashion. Residents are encouraged to become an active part of their Residents Council.

Retirement Living FAQs

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RETIREMENT LEVEL AND INDEPENDENT LEVEL AT THE RIVERINE
Our home is unique in that it offers two different types of accommodation. The features and amentiies for each of these levels as well as pricing difference is available on our website in our Features and Amenities section.
  • WHAT CAN I BRING?
Every room is tastefully painted with a neutral colour scheme with modern laminate or carpeted flooring ready to move in your furniture and to decorate your suite with personal items and mementos. You can bring any personal belongings with you that make you feel “at Home” in your new suite, provided they do not pose a safety risk to either you or others living at the home. We ask that all electrical items be checked by our staff to ensure they meet safety requirements. The safety of our residents and staff is considered for larger items or stationary items that could pose a trip or fall risk. Items that may make walking or mobility difficult may be discussed with residents individually.
  • CAN I BRING MY KEEPSAKES
Absolutely. We encourage our residents to make their suites feel just like home. Our on site maintenance team is here to help you to place items like pictures, televisions and wall décor to ensure safety for all.
  • WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE THE FOOD?
We offer a variety of menu options and a minimum of 2 meal choices at each meal. We offer either a three of five week menu cycle which our residents have an opportunity to meet and discuss each month. We prepare all of our meals in house offering homemade soups and desserts and recipes perfected from good “ old fashioned cooking”. Nutritional Care Managers, Food Service Supervisors and Dietitians are available for consultation. Accommodation may be made to assist with therapeutic diets and allergy and intolerance restrictions.
  • IS THERE TRANSPORTATION TO SHOPPING? APPOINTMENTS?
We are very pleased to have access to two private buses owned and operated by Crown Ridge Health Care as well as a passenger van. Our 2017 Pacifica van is perfect for outings of 1-4 residents. Our 2018 9 passenger limosine van is available for smaller group outings arranged by our Life Enrichment Coordinator and takes residents on outings several times each month. Our larger wheelchair accessible bus accommodates up to 18 ambulatory residents or 8-10 wheelchairs and walkers and is shared between all of our sites. It is available several times each month for planned community outings at our retirement residences. Unfortunately at this time we are unable to accommodate individual appointments.
  • WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER MOVING TO A RETIREMENT RESIDENCE?
It is never too early to start planning for your future or the future of your family members. We encourage any family members or residents to collect information and tour our residences in advance of retirement living needs whenever possible. At times waiting lists can become long and placing your name on a list early allows you flexibility to determine when you are ready for retirement living. Waiting lists are maintained and verified annually with the contact parties.
  • HOW MUCH DOES RETIREMENT LIVING COST?
Our retirement home rates are based on room size (square footage) and features. A complete list of prices and services are available during a tour or upon request.
  • CAN I COME AND GO AS I PLEASE?
Our retirement residences are your home. Residents are asked to notify staff if they are leaving the home for extended periods and will not be attending a meal or in the home at the time their medication is delivered. A sign out book is available at the entrances of our homes to record absence from the home.
  • WHAT ARE DINING OPTIONS?
Our retirement home residents enjoy three meals a day prepared and served by our staff in our professionally decorated dining rooms. Each meal offers a minimum of 2 choices. Residents are asked to attend all meals in the dining room.
  • CAN I BRING A CAR?
Yes you can bring your car and parking is free of charge.

Unfortunately pets other than authorized service animals are not currently able to reside at our homes.

Long Term Care FAQs

  • HOW MUCH DOES LONG TERM CARE COST IN ONTARIO
Long term care rates are based on accommodation types – private, semi- private or basic. Rates are set by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and are standardized across the province.
